While the Walls family lived in Phoenix, a clan of gypsies lived down the street from them. What the gypsies mainly did was steal stuff from them. For example, Jeannette's brother, Brian, had a pogo stick that went missing. Later they saw an old Gypsy woman bouncing down the street on it. Mrs. Walls got in a fight with the clan trying to get it back and then they found a dead chicken on their front porch. Mrs. Walls went back again for another round of fighting and they won back the pogo stick.
A couple days ago, I was talking with someone about gypsies because I had just read this part of the book. We talked about how they throw their "babies" at you while they pick your pockets and other stunts they pull to distract you. We also talked about how when she went to India, the peasants on the street would throw mud or poop on your shoe and then ask if you wanted it polished. I guess I am just glad there aren't gypsies I have to deal with in my neighborhood.
